What In All of God's Green Earth?

Road Trip Day One: We pulled off the road to grab some much needed food and searched for a park in which to consume it...We spotted a park, parked the car and got out all before spotting the "jolly green giant" standing in its center. Apparently we had unknowingly stumbled into Blue Mountain, Minnesota the home of the Green Giant Cannery.

According to Wickipedia:

In 1978, the town of Blue Earth, Minnesota paid $43,000 to erect a 55-foot (16.8 m) fiberglass statue of the Jolly Green Giant to commemorate the linking of the east and west sections of Interstate 90. It was permanently erected on July 6, 1979, at 43°39′02″N 94°5′46″W / 43.65056°N 94.09611°W / 43.65056; -94.09611 (Jolly Green Giant statue (Blue Earth, Minnesota)). The statue attracts over 10,000 visitors a year.

The 55 foot statue of the Green Giant in Blue Earth was the idea of Paul Hedberg who owned local radio station KBEW. During the summer Hedberg interviewed travelers going through Blue Earth on U.S. Highway 16 for his popular radio program called "Welcome Travelers". At the end of each traveler interview Hedberg presented guests a sample of Green Giant corn and peas which had been canned in the local Blue Earth Green Giant plant. A common theme arising in interviews was a desire to "see the Green Giant".

In 1977 Hedberg contacted Thomas H. Wyman, President of Green Giant, to see if the company would allow a statue of their corporate symbol to be erected along the new Interstate 90 in Blue Earth. Wyman granted permission under the condition that funds for the project were raised locally. Hedberg approached ten local businessmen with the idea and asked for $5,000 each; within a week the $50,000 had been donated.

The Green Giant Company worked with the statue builder, Creative Displays of Sparta, Wisconsin, to ensure accuracy in the depiction. One concern was that the Giant had never been shown from behind on television.

The Green Giant statue arrived in Blue Earth via flat bed truck on September 21, 1978 and was actually erected on the 23rd. The Giant was hoisted in a sling by a 65 foot crane in the north roadside rest area along I-90, where he overlooked the official opening of I-90 at a point where east met west, marking I-90's completion and representing a 3,028 mile nonstop route from Boston to Seattle.

The statue was placed in its present, permanent location on July 6, 1979, a mile south of I-90 on U.S. Highway 169. It is estimated that 10,000 people a year visit the statue. The pedestal is accessible by steps, and the statue is maintained by the city, which cleans the giant at least once a year and adorns it with a red scarf around his neck during the Christmas Season.

How's that for useless trivia?

Headed Homeward

Here are a few of the sights on our first day of driving. We hadn't counted on it costing us something like $15 in toles to get a car and trailer out of the Chicago suburbs, but luckily I had some cash in my purse. Aparently we also made it through "Cheesehead" county among others. The boys did pretty well on our first day of driving...I wish I could say the same for myself. After a few hours of driving West into the sun, I got the worst headache of my life and was rendered useless. Hannah had to take over driving and luckily the boys slept long enough for me to get in a little nap.

More Zoozie Zoo

You can't really tell but that is a hippo there in the water

These little Mearcats were Linus's favorite. He got so excited when the would scamper around and then stand up on the hind legs. He thought it was a trick and he kepts saying "please stand up, please stand up. Please!!!"

Hannah's mom didn't teach her that you never bend over to drink when there is a Lion near by. I think Aslan is about to ear her.

Lincoln Park Zoo

Today we went to the Lincoln Park Zoo it was free and really cool. There was a really neat Children's zoo with a huge climbing toy and lots of opportunities for the kids to get really close to the animals.

Hannah and Linus are up on the bridge...just pretend that you can tell :)

Baby Love

Hannah's friend who lives just across the hall from her was pregnant the same time I was and her baby girl Brielle was born just a couple days after Owen. So we betrothed them... and aren't they a cute couple? Brielle is a lot more advanced when it come to body strength and control, she sort of makes Owen look like a dough boy.

We Made It!

We made it to Chicago about 52 hours after we first boarded in Portland. It was a long trip but the boys did amazing. Linus was happy and entertained the entire way. We just put in a movie the last afternoon to make Grandpa happy since he bought Linus a new DVD player for the trip.

Delayed....

Who would have thought? Not me! Apparently, trains can be delayed too.
On this day we encountered Track repairs which forced us to sit in a station for about an hour and then there was a slower speed that had to be maintained on the newly laid tracks for a little over an hour. Unfortunately, this pushed our arrival into Chicago back enough to where we encounter commuter traffic all the way into Union Station. All in all we lost about 3 hours. Which feels like an awfully long time when you have already been sitting on the train for 48!

Here is our lovely train and where we got to spend the time we were waiting for them to finish the track repairs.
